NO-ISM

Bodhi Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a group exhibition by London based Japanese artists, Masahiro Suda, Hiroshi Kariya, Yuko Nasu, Naoki Koyama and Masaki Yada. The exhibition showcases a body of their recent work of their exploration of the painterly language and endeavors to establish their dialogue to the medium. The end result presented in this show is, however, not necessarily the ultimate destination of their artistic voyage, but the trajectory of the maturing process between ideas and the visual outcome.

The departure of the show coincided with the fact that they have shared a working space over a 4 month period. The artists were initially seeking an opportunity to investigate a relationship between the working environment and the exhibition context. By transferring their work from their usual studio environment to a gallery space, reevaluation of their work from a different angle was aimed at.

In contrast to the fact that the 5 artists are dealing with painting as a vehicle to express and convey their rationales and its language, they take utterly distinctive approaches to the medium of one another. As the notion of noism is the refusal and denial of any set of belief systems, there is no boundary between their individual art practices within the vocabularies of painting.

This exhibition aims to stimulate and evoke discussions about painting in the context of contemporary art where the position of painting has constantly been questioned. Simultaneously, it reassures a seductive quality that the act of painting has, which countless painters are self-evidently drawn into.

Please join us on the opening night of Thursday 19th March, 6PM - 8PM.

The exhibition continues until the 26 March 2009.

21

Bodhi Gallery relaunches on the 25th February with the opening of “21” a collection of paintings by Joe Holbrook.

Not many people can say they have put together a collection of work ready for their debut at the age of 20. But Joe Holbrook is one of the few that can, coming from a south London borough he brings us “21”, a series of portraits from the night life which we all love and can relate to. His paintings focused on the body of his chosen subject showing how body posture, and the garments which we wear often says a lot about us. All his canvases are painted in acrylics, then covered in a clear resin giving the impression it is finished with a layer of glass. He goes on…

“I also do this to freeze the painting in time almost, to capture what stage I was at in my level of painting, and to stop me working back into it at a later date”

After narrowly missing a prison sentence in 2008 for criminal damage, Joe found himself under probation doing 240 hours of community service, and hit with a £2500 fine, uni was now out of the question. So Joe decided to go it alone and teach himself how to better his painting through trial and error, and his natural talent.

“I’ve learnt no one can teach you your style, just you, and vice verse. However accepting your style is the hardest thing to overcome”

Having to work two part time jobs and finish his punishment it has been challenging year for Joe, but he still presents us with his debut exhibition which is a huge achievement for any young artist. I get the feeling this is just the beginning for him.

“I dunno what the future holds, but I’m never gonna stop painting. I’m a bit board of body portraits so am gonna give that a rest for a little while. I’ve got much stronger new ideas ready though, I can tell you that… ask my mates Josh or Jimmy. As for graffiti I’m never gonna be done with that either haha! Its to much fun, my fingers have been itching for the last year! I see it as more of a disability or mental illness haha! … definitely!”

Joe Holbrook’s debut show will be taking place at Bodhi Gallery on East London’s famous Brick Lane from 7pm on the 25th of February till the 4th of March 2009.
